This UK city has been named the best destination in the world – it’s not London

Lonely Planet has just held their “Best in Travel” awards for 2018, and a UK city has been named the best region.

Northern Ireland’s Belfast won the award over places like Alaska and the Julian Alps of Slovenia.

The travel publisher said it won because of it’s “timeless beauty and high-grade distractions – golf, whiskey and some of the world’s most famous rocks”.

They added: ”The region may be famous for Game of Thrones but its many scenic filming locations are just the start.”

Just this year, tourism numbers to Northern Ireland have risen by 10% with a record two million visitors in the first six months of 2017.

Even the Republic of Ireland have jumped on board with a 23% increase in Irish visiting their northern neighbours.

John McGrillen, chief executive of Tourism NI, said: “The positive growth has been supported by an intensive burst of partnership marketing initiatives in the Republic of Ireland highlighting both well-established and new tourism offerings from Titanic and the Causeway to Seamus Heaney Homeplace and the Game of Thrones tapestry.”

The awards revealed the best regions, countries, cities and best value destinations for 2018.

Belfast isn’t the only UK appearance on the lists. Britain was named the seventh “Best Value” destination.
