Consequently, if you’re hoping to save money by flying hand luggage only it’s key to pack savvily.
There’s one mistake you should never make when sorting out your cabin luggage ahead of a holiday.
The experts at holiday company Flight Centre have shared their top tips.
They advise never packing an item of clothing that can only be worn once.
This is because it will take up space and won’t actually be that much use to you on your break.
Packing such items could push you over the luggage allowance.
“Make sure everything you bring can be worn more than once,” recommended Flight Centre on their website.
“Anything that only goes with one shirt or one pair of trousers should be left at home.”
The same rule applies to footwear – make sure your shoes go with multiple outfits.
Simplicity is often best when it comes to minimalist packing.
“Stick to simple items and neutral colours, and you should be able to mix and match nearly everything you pack,’ advised Flight Centre.
Airline cabin crew memeber Heather Poole shared her hand luggage packing tips in her book Cruising Attitude.

“To make things simple, pack black and be done with it,” she wrote.
“So what if you wear the same outfit over and over? That’s what easy-to-pack accessories are for!
“Scarves and jewellery can completely change boring black into something fab.
“And whatever gets left behind becomes the perfect excuse to go shopping for something new!”
Some clothing items you will only need one of – so be strict with yourself.
“If you need to dress up once or twice, pack one nice outfit, don’t bring three different options,” said Flight Centre.
“Unless you’re going swimming every day, one bathing suit should be enough.”
The holiday company also points out that travellers should remember they can always buy certain items while away.
Toiletries can be bought on holiday, as can, for instance, beach towels.
