US man dies on Emirates airline flight from Dubai to Boston

Chief medical examiner testing for Covid-19 as part of post-mortem examination

There were approximately 322 passengers on board the Boeing 777 plane, as well as 18 crew members.

A 59-year-old American man died on Friday on an Emirates flight travelling from Dubai to Boston, according to Massachusetts State Police.

A statement from the state police said they were notified about a passenger in cardiac arrest aboard the Emirates flight at around 12.30pm. The plane landed at 2.55pm but the man was pronounced dead at 3pm.

The cause of death is pending autopsy results, although his family said he had no pre-existing medical conditions.

The police statement said: “In light of the man’s international travel, the office of the chief medical examiner in an abundance of caution will test for Covid-19 as part of its post-mortem examination. The State Police investigation remains open while we await those autopsy results.”

The man had travelled to Chennai, India, earlier this month and had a stopover in Dubai before heading back to the USA.

Police said he had “been sick with gastrointestinal problems for several days prior to and including the day of his death”.
