Airlines ramping up service to Germany and the Netherlands

Star Alliance airlines United and Lufthansa will increase service between the U.S. and Germany in July following Germany’s reopening to Americans on June 25.

Meanwhile, Delta will beef up service to Amsterdam next month, home of its joint-venture partner KLM, following the Netherlands reopening to American travelers on June 24.

Beginning June 25, U.S. residents will be welcome to visit Germany provided that they are vaccinated, can show proof of recovery from Covid-19, can show proof of a negative Covid-19 PRC test taken within 72 hours of arrival or can show proof of a negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test taken within 48 hours of arrival.

The Lufthansa Group will also bulk up flying between the U.S. and northern Europe this summer. The airline group, which includes Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels airlines, will fly approximately 190 weekly U.S. frequencies in July, up from approximately 150 this month. Lufthansa Group airlines will fly to 18 U.S. destinations in July compared to 15 this month. Along with Germany’s reopening, Lufthansa is to benefit from Switzerland’s tentative plan to open to vaccinated U.S. citizens on June 28.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, will reopen to U.S. travelers June 24. No negative Covid-19 test will be required. The country’s website also makes no mention of a proof-of-vaccination requirement.

Delta will respond by adding a total of 11 weekly frequencies to Amsterdam on July 7 from Atlanta, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, giving it a total of more than 50 weekly frequencies between the U.S and the Netherlands.

Delta will also reintroduce daily New York-Lisbon flights on Aug.1 due to Portugal’s reopening to American visitors. And, the airline has ended its testing program for flights to Italy following the easing of visitation protocols by the Italian government.
