Bear Grylls Is Opening the Ultimate Survivalist Adventure Camp

Bear Grylls climbs a mountain

The world's first Bear Grylls Explorer Camp will open this month in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the country’s highest mountain, Jebel Jais, in Ras Al Khaimah, according to Esquire.

While the camp is not run by TV host and survivalist Bear Grylls himself, small groups of wannabe explorers can learn some of the most essential survival skills by experts from the Bear Grylls Survival Academy in the UK, Esquire reported.

Some of the lessons you can expect to learn during this course include how to build a fire in the wilderness, how to build emergency shelter, knife use, common medical treatments, how to navigate, and how to deal with extreme weather conditions.. Lessons will range between the very basics to dealing with more extreme situations on different types of terrain.

Visitors can choose between half-day sessions (about four hours), full day sessions (eight hours), or 24-hour and 48-hour courses. Those who stay overnight will be able to stay in one of the camp’s 20 redesigned shipping container lodges, where they’ll have access to a personal barbecue pit and balcony in order to cook their own meals, Lonely Planet reported.

Managing director of Bear Grylls Survival Academy, Paul Gardiner, said in a statement to Esquire that the new camp is “a must-go destination for adventure and nature seekers alike.”

“In 2018, we launched the world’s longest zipline on Jebel Jais and are delighted to announce another first with the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp on the UAE’s highest mountain,” said Raki Philips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development, in a statement to Lonely Planet. “As Ras Al Khaimah continues to grow as the adventure capital in the Middle East, this exhilarating survival experience from one of the world’s best-known experts will drive us on that path to attract outdoor enthusiasts from across the globe.”

The camp is set to open Oct. 16 with overnight accommodations available in 2021, Lonely Planet reported. Packages begin at 450 AED (about $123 USD) for the half day course. There are also options for families or people who just want to attend a short bootcamp as well.
